一、阅读理解

Reading a dog’s body language requires experience and expert guidance. Zazie Todd, a dog trainer and founder of the blog Companion Animal Psychology, weighs in on how to explain dog’ behaviour.

If your dog licks its mouth...

They’re stressed. Recently, two European studies have highlighted the meaning of this licking. One found that it was a dog response to seeing an angry human face on a computer screen, the other determined that dogs lick their mouths—and also look away—in response to a mild threat. If you spot this sign, try reducing your dog’s stress levels.

If there are fireworks and your dog is shaking…

The noises are frightening. This is a common reaction, but a surprising number of people don’t realize that shaking and trembling are signs of fear. Whereas only a quarter of owners say their dog is afraid of loud noises, half report these behavioral signs, according to research published in Applied Animal Behaviour Science. If you think your pup would be comforted, pet them and remain nearby.

If you’re at the vet and your dog’s tail is down…

They’re anxious. Obvious signs of an unhappy dog include hiding or trying to leave the exam room, but commonly missed signs range from a tucked tail and lowered ears to trembling. If your dog gets bored at appointments, many vets now use food to make the experience more fun.

If your dog leans into you during a petting session…

They like it! If you’re unsure that a dog is enjoying being petted, stop, then judge their reaction. This is called an approval test. If they choose to wander off, the session is over. Other signs of discomfort include sniffing the floor, looking away and panting(喘息). However, if they lean on you or paw at you to get more permission, continue! 1.According to Zazie’s view, we can understand a dog’s feeling by ______. A.its pose

C.its communication

B.its eye contact D.its behavioral signs

When I started my own business, I thought I had it all figured out. When I made the decision to change my lifestyle and get fit, I thought I was on the right track. And when I purchased a second business, I knew I was doing the right thing. Slowing down never occurred to me.

But something was wrong. My Apple watch buzzed repeatedly in the night, warning me that my heart rate was over one hundred. My body ached, my head pounded, and no matter how much I exercised, I was losing strength.

When I visited the doctor, the first thing she asked was “How’s your stress level?” I shrugged. “Nothing new or out of the ordinary.” But something was happening in my body. A multitude of tests and blood work revealed I had Graves’ disease, with symptoms that include accelerated heart rate, high blood pressure, physical anxiety, tiredness, and muscle weakness.

For the next week, I re-read online articles indicating that stress management played a part in controlling Graves’ disease. And I made a list of everything I was juggling(兼顾). My calendar was filled with online marketing, photo shoots, website design, and copywriting. I barely had time to blink, let alone relax.

It was hard to decide which were the most important and do them first. I examined the juggling act and tried to decide what to let go of. I bid farewell to clients, explaining I was cutting back and lightening my workload. When asked to speak at events or take on new projects, I said “No.” And I found someone to help me plan that big event.

Until then, I didn’t realize how much I’d missed the simple joys—little things that helped me relax and recharge, like long hikes, taking my dog to the park, visiting my favorite bookstore, and sitting on the back porch to watch the sunrise. I know my limits and when it’s time to stop juggling. I’ve learned to be kind to myself. I start each day with meditation(冥想)

One of the most important factors of successful job hunting is the job interview. There are thousands of people entering new careers and searching for job placement. In order to give yourself an edge over others applying for the job you want, it is important to create a solid impression during the job interview.

Because what you say during an interview is so important, there are two rules to remember. One is to present yourself in a favorable way and stress your areas of competence. However, don’t overstate; tell the truth. Second, listen carefully and get involved in what the interviewer is saying. Notice the interviewer’s interests and relate your comments to them.

If you are not certain what the job will require of you, ask questions to see whether you do feel qualified. Do more listening than talking. Don’t be afraid to ask for a second interview if you need time to gather information that will be more useful in the second interview. Most interviewers will appreciate your questions and your ability to listen and respond.

Each of us has sensitive areas, which could refer to your lack of an academic degree, a long period of unemployment, or lack of work experience if you are entering a new field. Answer sensitive questions briefly and positively. If you believe that this area presents a real obstacle to a job offer, you could be communicating this doubt to the interviewer. Many times, however, an interviewer will override these sensitive areas if you have a confident, positive attitude.

There’s a child-like joy that comes with ordering something online—whether it is clothes or kitchen gadgets. We sit refreshing the U.S. Postal Service or FedEx pages to see when our items will arrive, and we become overly excited, hopeful and anxious.

But why? According to Owen O’Kane, a psychotherapist, even the smallest positive future events can motivate us when were feeling down—especially during the pandemic, which has been filled with unexpected disappointments. This is why people look forward to dinner reservations, hair appointments and yes, receiving packages. “It’s anticipatory pleasure that something positive and good is going to happen when you get this parcel, and a lot of people realize that placing that order and waiting for it does feel good,” he says.

But it’s not the purchase itself that elicits this happiness. Experts say there’s something 试卷第4页,共10页

about the anticipation of waiting, which is exciting for those in need of change in their lives.

Anticipation isn’t always a good thing, however. People went crazy recently when the U.S. Postal Service announced that its mail delivery would become permanently slower. And now, many are worried about their items arriving on time, appearing broken, or simply not living up to expectations. This phenomenon is called pre-parcel anxiety, and it’s more common than you might think.

O’Kane says many people often seek external solutions, such as luxury purchases or alcohol, “as a way of feeling better quickly”. However, a healthier long-term coping mechanism is to look inward and appreciate your life with “mindfulness and gratitude”.

So the next time you feel eager to order and track something online, consider why. “I think you’ll find that shopping for and receiving an item is stimulating on some level, but also about the most passive way to live,” Howes says. “Challenge yourself to take action in your life instead of waiting for it to arrive.” 12.What is the purpose of writing paragraph 1? A.To present a popular shopping trend. B.To warn readers of a dangerous situation. C.To arouse readers’ interest about shopping online. D.To introduce the topic of ordering something online.

13.Which can replace the underlined word “elicits” in paragraph 3? A.Bring up. C.Bring about.

B.Put forward. D.Put off.

14.What might O’Kane and Howes agree about tracking delivery online? A.It’s an unusual thing in life. C.It’s an unhealthy addiction.

B.It’s not a passive way to live. D.It’s a positive way to look inward.

15.Which word best describes the author’s attitude to tracking packages? A.Doubtful. C.Conservative.

B.Tolerant. D.Objective.
