---By Anna Walker Women's Library, Glasgow

Rows of books on women's issues throughout history line the shelves of the only official museum in the UK dedicated to women's lives, histories and achievements and a number of events across the year transform this library into a living social hub, with creative writing classes, performance groups, craft sessions and more.

The library's key aim is to support women, with services teaching literacy, calculations, and handling a range of issues including poverty, and surviving violence.

Created over 100 years ago as a gift to Manchester and its people, the John Ryland welcomes over 250,000 visitors through its doors each year. The project began as a honor by Enriqueta Ryland to her late husband John Ryland, and has grown to become the third largest academic library in the UK, home to over

Modern extensions to the building added since the 2000s create a breath-taking collision (冲突) of historic and modem architecture. Regular events planned with the whole family in mind make this library one to visit time and time again.

It was unusually quiet in the emergency room on December 25. I didn't think there would be any

patients, sighing about having to work on Christmas. Just then five bodies showed up at my desk, a pale woman and four small children. “Are you all sick?” I asked doubtfully. “Yes,” she said weakly and lowered her head.

But when it came to descriptions of their presenting problems, things got a little vague. Two of the children had headaches, but the headaches weren't accompanied by the normal body language of holding the head or trying to keep it still. Two children had earaches, but only one could tell me which ear was affected. The mother complained of a cough but seemed to work to produce it.

Something was wrong, but I didn't say anything but explained that it might be a little while before a doctor saw her. She responded,Take your time; it's warm in here.”

On a hunch (直觉),I checked the chart after the admitting clerk had finished registering the family. No address— they were homeless. The waiting room was warm.

I looked out at the family huddled by the Christmas tree. The littlest one was pointing at the television and saying something loudly and excitedly to her mother. The oldest one was looking at an ornament on the Christmas tree.

I went back to the nurses' station and mentioned we had a homeless family in the waiting room. The nurses, complaining about working Christmas, turned to compassion for a family just trying to get warm on Christmas. The team went into action, much as we do when there's a medical emergency. But this one was a Christmas emergency.

We were all offered a free meal in the hospital cafeteria on Christmas Day,so we claimed that meal and prepared a banquet for our Christmas guests. As seriously as we met the physical needs of the patients that came to us that day, our team worked to meet the needs, and exceed the expectations, of a family who just wanted to be warm on Christmas Day. Later,as the family walked to the door to leave, the four year -old came running back, gave me a hug and whispered, \"Thanks for being our angels today.”

4. What did the author learn from the family s descriptions of presenting problems? A.Two of the children had headaches. B.One of the children had earaches. C.The mother pretended to be coughing. D.The whole family were seriously ill.

5. The author made sure that the family were homeless by ______. A.asking them some questions B.listening to their introduction C.observing their facial expressions D.checking their registration information

6. After knowing about the homeless family, the nurses ______. A.gave them a medical treatment B.provided them with a big dinner C.prepared a Christmas tree for them D.held a big Christmas party for them

7. What can be the best title for the text? A.An Unusual Christmas Emergency B.Warm hearted and Beautiful Nurse Angels C.Having Christmas Together With a Poor Family D.Receiving Special Christmas Guests in the Waiting Room

An estimated 60 percent of cats and 50 percent of dogs in the U. S. are overweight or obese, so chances are that your pet needs to lose weight rather than pack on some pounds. It's not always easy to tell if your pet could afford to lose a few, but there are some other signs that can tip you off. One important factor: the waist. \"Most people don't know what a normal cat should look like,\" says Routine. \"But cats should have waists, too.\" The vet says you should be able to feel your pet's ribs(肋骨)through its coat, and when you look down at them, they should have an hourglass (沙漏) shape-just like a person.

\"For some overweight pets, you may want to switch to a new food entirely; foods with 'light' or 'healthy weight' labels usually have an increased fiber content to help the dog or cat feel fuller,\" Romine notes. \"Another option is to feed them less of the food they currently cat,\" Freeman suggests. \"Make sure you're reducing table scraps(残羹剩饭)and high-calorie treats like pet biscuits,\" she says.

It's important to figure out what your pet's ideal weight is as you're helping them to lose. Romine advises working with your vet to get the right number, and if you're following the portion guidelines often printed on food labels, feed them the amount of food associated with the weight you want them to be, rather

than the weight they currently are.

Food isn't the only factor that can impact your pet's weight. Ronine stresses the importance of exercise in keeping your pet healthy. For cats, just 10 minutes of indoor play each day can make a difference. For dogs, letting them out in the backyard to do their business is not enough. You'll have to exercise with your dog to really get them moving.

8. What is the problem with the pet from the text? A.It needs to lose weight. B.It needs to have waists. C.It needs to pack on pounds. D.It needs to be more energetic.

9. Which food can help overweight pets? A.The food with an decreased fiber. B.The food from table scraps. C.The food with \"light\" labels.

D.The food with a new label.

10. What is an important factor to keep pets healthy? A.A partner. B.Exercise. C.Pet biscuits. D.Protein.

11. From which is the text probably taken? A.A biology textbook. B.A travel brochure. C.A recipe book. D.A pet magazine.

While jewelry made from gold can be beautiful, most people admit that wearing the heavy metal over long periods of time can get a little annoying. Now, researchers from Swiss university ETH Zurich have created a new form of lightweight gold that weighs five to ten times less than traditional 18-carat

gold—which typically consists of 75 percent gold and 25 percent copper—but has the same purity. The researchers began by mixing gold with water, salt, protein fibers and other materials. They then replaced the water with alcohol and placed the mixture inside a high-pressure carbon dioxide (CO2) box. The reaction between the gas and alcohol transformed the golden plastic into a light material that can be heated to melt and made into whatever form was needed. \"This gold has some characteristics of plastic,” says team leader Raffaele Mezzenga, professor of Food and Soft Materials at ETH Zurich.

In addition to being lighter, the \"plastic” gold has other advantages over traditional forms. It can be melted into shape at about 105 degrees Celsius, much lower than the 1,064 degrees Celsius required to melt pure 24-carat gold. The metal's firmness can be easily adjusted by changing the components at the beginning of the process. It is also much easier to vary the color. \"As a general rule, our approach lets us create almost any kind of gold we choose, in line with the desired properties, says Mezzenga.

The researchers, who published their study in the journal Advanced Functional Materials on January 10, 2020, believe the new lightweight gold will be able to replace the metallic version in most traditional applications, including jewelry and watches. However, given that most buyers associate high-quality gold with weight, that may take some time. But the material will undoubtedly be beneficial for use inside electronic devices, chemical catalysts (催化剂),and even radiation shielding. 12. Why do many people find the traditional gold annoying? A.It costs too much。 B.Its purity is too low.

C.It feels too heavy to wear long. D.Its beauty lasts a short time,

13. What is the second paragraph mainly about? A.The functions of the \"plastic\" gold. B.The components of the \"plastic” gold. C.The characteristics of the \"plastic” gold. D.The production process of the \"plastic\" gold.

14. Which is the \"plastic\" gold's advantage over the traditional gold? A.It is easier to process. B.It is more widely used.

C.It has a lower temperature. D.It is more convenient to get.

15. Where is this text most likely from? A.A diary. B.A guidebook. C.A novel. D.A magazine.
