Antarctica, with its seemingly endless icy beauty, is one place where one look is worth a thousand words. My own dream to see it came true last January when I joined the sixth exploration (考察) crew of the China National Marine Bureau. We spent 10 days connecting flights to reach our goal, but finally arrived at the Great Wall Station on Antarctica on the eve of Chinese New Year.

There are only two seasons in Antarctica: winter and summer. You get polar (极地) nights in winter and polar days in summer. Day is longer than night in summer, and the temperature often reaches below zero. Luckily, there are no snowstorm in summer, which makes it the best season to travel. What I imagined before starting for Antarctica was a world of ice, storms, endless cold and loneliness. When I stopped on Antarctica for the first time, however, I saw rich, energetic and beautiful scenery that was beyond anything I had imagined.

We only spent 11 days at the South Pole, but every minute was spent taking pictures and losing our heart to the wonderland. Beauty struck us as we watched the world around us. The mountains, oceans, ice, snow, sky, earth and inhabitants (居民) all seemed to have their own stories.

Rocks from Antarctica are considered valuable. Unfortunately, I didn't bring one back. However, my heavy bags full of film are certainly worth that. It is in these pictures that the true Antarctica comes alive.

A “blogger” is a person who writes an Internet computer Website called a“blog”. The word “blog” is a short way of saying Web log, or personal Website.. Anyone can start a blog, and they can

第5页 共10页

write about anything they like.

There are millions of blogs on the Internet today. They provide news, information and ideas to many people who read them. They contain links to other Websites. And they provide a place for people to write their ideas and react to the ideas of others.

A research company called Perseus has studied more than 3,000 Web logs. It says that blogs are most popular with teenage girls. They use them to let their friends know what is happening in their lives. The study also says that more than 100,000 bloggers stopped taking part in the activity after a year.

However, some people develop serious blogs to present political and other ideas. For example, the Republican and Democratic parties in the southern state of Kentucky recently started their own blogs. And American companies are beginning to use blogs to advertise their products.

At the same time, some long-standing blogs have ended. Last week, blogging leader Dave Winer closed his free blog service, weblogs.com.He says the site became too costly to continue. He started the blog four years ago, and thousands of people had written on it. They are now upset because they did not know why the site was closed.

One blog that is still going strong is called Rebecca’s Pocket.Rebecca Blood created the Web site in 1999. She wrote about the history of blogs on the site. That article led to a book called“The Weblog Handbook.”It has been translated into four languages so far.

Miss Blood says Rebecca’s Pocket gets about thirty thousand visitors a month. She writes about anything and everything — politics, culture and movies. She recently provided medical advice. And she wrote about how to prevent people from stealing money from on-line bank accounts (帐户). 64.The text is mainly written to ________.

Shyness is the cause of much unhappiness for a great many people.Shy people are anxious and self conscious; that is, they are concerned with their own appearance and actions. Worrisome thoughts are constantly occurring in their minds:what kind of impression am I making? Do they like me? Do I sound stupid? Am I wearing unattractive clothes?

It is obvious that such uncomfortable feelings must affect people unfavorably. A person’s self-concept (自我概念) is reflected in the way he or she behaves, and the way a person behaves affects other people’s reactions. In general, the way people think about themselves has a deep effect on all areas of their lives.

Shy people have low self-esteem(respect),are likely to be passive and easily influenced by others. They need reassurance that they are doing“the right thing”. Shy people are very sensitive to

第6页 共10页

criticism. It makes them feel inferior(自卑).

They also find it difficult to be pleased by praises because they believe they are unworthy of praise.A shy person may respond to a praise with a statement like this one. “You’re just saying that to make me feel good. I know it’s not true.”It is clear that, while self awareness is a healthy quality, overdoing it is harmful.

Can shyness be completely got rid of, or at least reduced? Fortunately, people can overcome shyness with determination. It is important for people to accept their weakness as well as their strength, for example, not fair for them to label themselves inferior because they have to be realistic. Living on the impossible leads to a sense of inferiority.

Each one of us has his or her own characteristics. We are interested in our own personal ways. The better we understand ourselves, the easier it becomes to live up to our chances for a rich and fulfilling life.

68.The first paragraph is mainly about _________. A.the cause of shyness B.the effect of shyness on people C.the questions in the minds of shy people D.the thoughts of shy people 69.According to the writer, self-awareness is _________. A.the weakest point of shy people B.the cause of unhappiness C.a good characteristic if not overdone D.harmful to people 70.What is the shy people’s reaction to praise? ________

A.They feel it is not true. B.They are very sensitive to it. C.They feel they are worthy of it. D.They are pleased with it. 71.We can learn from the text that shyness can _________.

A.enable us to understand ourselves better B.block our chances for a successful life C.have nothing to do with lack of self-esteem D.help to live up to our full development

Bill wanted a big pot for a dinner party, so he borrowed one from a neighbour. After dinner party he took it back with a small pot inside.

“Your pot had a baby while it was with us,” he said.

Of course, the neighbour was very pleased. And when Bill came to borrow the big pot again for another party, he lent it to him gladly.

This time Bill did not bring the pot back, so after a few days, the man went to Bill’s house. “What has happened to my big pot?” he asked. “Why have you not returned it to me?” “Oh, the big pot?” said Bill. “It died while it was with us.” “Died?” said the neighbour angrily. “But pots do not die!”

“Why do you say that?” answered Bill. “When I said, ‘the pot has had a baby’, you did not say, ‘Pots do not have babies’, did you?” 1—5 CBABB 21—25 DBDDA 41—45 BDADC 61—65 ACDCD 76.much→more 80.√

Hong Kong lies to the south of Shenzhen, Guangdong Province of China. It has a population of about 6,000,000 and area of more than 1,000 square kilometers. It has not only the modern seaport but also the famous New International Airport.

The newly-built railway from Beijing to Jiulong connects Hong Kong and the capital of our country. Thousands and thousands of tourists come to Hong Kong every year to visit the well-known Ocean Park and Disneyland. They also find Hong Kong a shopper’s paradise.

Since long ago, Hong Kong belonged to China. Unfortunately, more than 150 years ago, the English soldiers invaded China and occupied Hong Kong by force.

To the great delight of Chinese people, Hong Kong returned to China on July 1,1997. Being a Chinese, I’m very proud of our great powerful country. Now no one can prevent us from reuniting with our motherland.
