If I were granted three seeing days

All of us have read thrilling(exciting 令人激动的) stories in which the hero had only a limited and specified(specific 特定的) time to live. Sometimes it was as long as a year; sometimes as short as twenty-four hours. But always we were interested in discovering just how the doomed(命中注定要死的)

man chose to spend his last days or his last hours. I speak, of course, of free men who have a choice, not

condemned(sentence 判刑) criminals(犯人) whose sphere(area范围) of activities is strictly delimited(to fix the limits of限定).

Such stories set us thinking, wondering what we should do under similar circumstances(conditions;situation情况;环境). What events, what experiences, what associations(交往)

should we crowd into(把什么挤进) those last hours as mortal(终有一死的) beings? What happiness should

we find in reviewing(looking back upon回顾) the past, what regrets?

Sometimes I have thought it would be an excellent rule(habit) to live each day as if we should die

tomorrow. Such an attitude would emphasize(stress 强调) sharply(鲜明地) the values of life. We should live each day with a gentleness, a vigor, and a keenness(热心;渴望) of appreciation(欣赏;评定) which are often

lost when time stretches(延伸) before us in the constant(连续的) panorama(综观) of more days and

months and years to come. There are those, of course, who would adopt the Epicurean motto of “Eat, drink,

and be merry,“ but most people would be chastened(punished 惩戒 ) by the certainty of impending(about

to happen即将发生的) death.

In stories the doomed hero is usually saved at the last minute by some stroke

of fortune(luck一桩幸事),

but almost always his sense of values is changed. he becomes more appreciative(有欣赏力的) of the meaning

of life and its permanent(lasting 永恒的) spiritual(精神的) values. It has often been noted that those who live, or have lived, in the shadow(阴影) of death bring a mellow(甜熟的) sweetness to everything they do.

Most of us, however, take life for granted(认为是理所当然的). We know that one day we must

die, but usually we picture that day as far in the future. When we are in buoyant(愉快的) health, death is all

but(almost几乎) unimaginable. We seldom think of it. The days stretch out in an endless vista(远景). So

we go about(set about 着手;从事于) our petty(琐碎的) tasks, hardly aware of(意识到) our listless

(tired倦怠的) attitude toward life.

The same lethargy(laziness懒散), I am afraid, characterizes(是什么的特征) the

use of all

our faculties(天赋;能力) and senses. Only the deaf appreciate hearing, only the blind realize the manifold(多方面的) blessings(赐福;恩典) that lie in sight. Particularly does this observation(comment;remark

评论) apply to(适用于) those who have lost sight and hearing in adult life. But those who have never suffered impairment(damage 损伤) of sight or hearing seldom make the fullest use of these blessed faculties(天赐的官能). Their eyes and ears take in all sights and sounds hazily(unclearly;uncertainly模糊

地;不明确地), without concentration(专心;集中) and with little appreciation. It is the same old story of not

being grateful(感激的) for what we have until we lose it, of not being conscious of(意识到) health until

we are ill.

I have often thought it would be a blessing if each human being were stricken blind and deaf for a few days at some time during his early adult life. Darkness would make him more appreciative of sight; silence would teach him the joys of sound.

Now and then I have tested my seeing friends to discover what they see. Recently I was visited by a very good friends who had just returned from a long walk in the woods, and I asked her what she had observed(to see and notice看见). “Nothing in particular, “ she replied. I might have been incredulous

(doubtful;unbelivable怀疑的;不相信的) had I not been accustomed to (been used to习惯于)such

responses(replies回答), for long ago I became convinced(使确信) that the seeing see little.

How was it possible, I asked myself, to walk for an hour through the woods and see nothing worthy of note(worth noticing or paying attention to值得注意的)? I who cannot see find hundreds of things to

interest me through mere(only) touch. I feel the delicate(精巧的;完美的) symmetry(对称性) of a leaf. I pass

my hands lovingly(喜爱地) about the smooth skin of a silver birch(桦树), or the rough, shaggy(粗糙

的)bark(树皮) of a pine(松树). In the spring I touch the branches of trees hopefully in search of a bud(嫩芽)-- the first sign of awakening Nature after her winter?s sleep. I feel the delightful, velvety(天鹅绒般

的) texture(质地) of a flower, and discover its remarkable convolutions(卷曲;盘绕); and something of

the miracle(奇迹) of Nature is revealed(使展现) to me. Occasionally(happening from time to time ;not

regularly偶尔;不经常的), if I am very fortunate, I place my hand gently on a small tree and feel the happy quiver(颤抖) of a bird in full song. I am delighted to have the cool waters of a brook(小溪) rush through

my open finger. To me a lush(茂密的) carpet of pine needles(松针叶) or spongy(富弹性的) grass is

more welcome than the most luxurious(豪华的) Persian rug(波斯地毯). To me the pageant(壮观而华

丽的展示) of seasons is a thrilling and unending drama, the action of which streams(涌淌) through my

finger tips.

At times my heart cries out with longing to (渴望)see all these things. If I can get so much pleasure from

mere touch, how much more beauty must be revealed(显露) by sight. Yet, those who have eyes apparently

see little. The panorama of color and action which fills the world is taken for granted. It is human, perhaps, to appreciate little that which we have and to long for that which we have not, but it is a great pity that in the world of light the gift of sight is used only as a mere convenience rather than as a means of adding fullness(完美) to life.

If I were the president(校长) of a university I should establish(set up建立;设立) a compulsory(强

制的) course in “How to Use Your Eyes“. The professor would try to show his pupils how they could add joy to their lives by really seeing what passes unnoticed(未注意的) before them. He would try to awake

their dormant(休眠的) and sluggish(懒散的) faculties.

Perhaps I can best illustrate(清楚地说明) by imagining what I should most like to see if I were given

the use of my eyes, say, for just three days. And while I am imagining, suppose you, too, set your mind to work on the problem of how you would use your own eyes if you had only three more days to see. If with the

on-coming darkness of the third night you knew that the sun would never rise for you again, how would you

spend those three precious(宝贵的) intervening(插进来的) days? What would you most want to let your gaze(凝视;注视) rest upon(停留)?

I, naturally, should want most to see the things which have become dear(珍贵的) to me through my

years of darkness. You, too, would want to let your eyes rest on the things that have become dear to you so

that you could take the memory of (记住)them with you into the night that loomed(威胁性地出现) before

you.

If, by some miracle, I were granted(给予) three seeing days, to be followed by a relapse(沉陷) into

darkness, I should divide the period into three parts.

The First Day

On the first day, I should want to see the people whose kindness and gentleness and companionship(friendly company;fellowship友谊;同伴情谊) have made my life worth living. First I should like to gaze long upon(长久地凝视) the face of my dear teacher, Mrs. Anne Sullivan Macy, who came to me when I was a child and opened the outer(外部的) world to me. I should want not merely to see the outline(轮廓) of her face, so that I could cherish(珍惜) it in my memory, but to study that face and find in it the living evidence(证据) of the sympathetic(富有同情心的) tenderness(温柔) and patience

with which she accomplished(完成) the difficult task of my education. I should like to see in her eyes that strength了(力量) of character(性格) which has enabled(使能够) her to stand firm(坚定的) in the

face of difficulties, and that compassion(同情心) for all humanity(人) which she has revealed to me so

often.

I do not know what it is to see into the heart of a friend through that “Window of the soul(心

灵)“, the eye. I can only “see“ through my finger tips the outline(轮廓) of a face. I can detect(察觉) laughter,

sorrow(悲伤), and many other obvious emotions(感情). I know my friends from the feel(感触) of their faces.

But I cannot really picture(描绘出) their personalities(品格) by touch. I know their personalities, of course, through other means, through the thoughts they express to me, through whatever of their actions are

revealed(表露) to me. But I am denied(否认;拒绝相信) that deeper understanding of them which I am sure would come through sight(看到) of them, through watching their reactions to various expressed thoughts and circumstances(情况), through noting(noticing注意) the immediate(直接的) and fleeting(短暂的)

reactions(反应) of their eyes and countenance(相貌).

Friends who are near to me I know well, because through the months and years they reveal(表

露) themselves to me in all their phases(方面); but of casual(偶然的) friends I have only an incomplete

impression, an impression gained from a handclasp(握手), from spoken words which I take from their lips with my finger tips, or which they tap(轻轻地拍抚) into the palm of my hand.

How much easier, how much more satisfying it is for you who can see to grasp(抓住;了解)

quickly the essential qualities(本质) of another person by watching the subtleties(微妙) of expression, the

quiver(颤抖) of a muscle, the flutter(颤抖) of a hand. But does it ever occur to(发生) you to use your

sight(视觉) to see into(看透) the inner nature(内在本质) of a friends or acquaintance(熟人),

Don„t most of you seeing people grasp casually(偶然地) the outward features(外部特征) of a face and

let it go at that?

For instance(例如) can you describe accurately(精确地) the faces of five good friends? some of you can, but many cannot. As an experiment, I have questioned husbands of long standing(多年相处)

about the color of their wives? eyes, and often they express embarrassed confusion(窘迫含糊) and admit

that they do not know. And, incidentally(by the way顺便说一句), it is a chronic complaint(经常的抱怨) of

wives that their husbands do not notice new dresses, new hats, and changes in household arrangements(家

庭摆设).

The eyes of seeing persons soon become accustomed to(习惯) the routine(日常事务) of their

surroundings, and they actually see only the startling (令人吃惊的事)and spectacular(引人注意的壮观

之事). But even in viewing the most spectacular(壮观的) sights the eyes are lazy. Court(法庭) records

reveal every day how inaccurately(不准确) “eyewitnesses“ see. A given(特定的) event will be “seen“ in

several different ways by as many witnesses(目击者). Some see more than others, but few see everything that is within the range of their vision(在他们的视线范围内).

Oh, the things that I should see if I had the power of sight for just three days!

The first day would be a busy one. I should call to me all my dear friends and look long into

their faces, imprinting(印) upon my mind the outward evidences of the beauty that is within them(他们

的内在美的外部证据). I should let my eyes rest, too, on the face of a baby, so that I could catch a vision(视

觉) of the eager, innocent(纯洁的) beauty which precedes(在之前) the individual(人)?s consciousness

(意识) of the conflicts(冲突) which life develops(带来).

And I should like to look into the loyal, trusting eyes of my dogs --the grave(严肃的), canny

(机灵的) little Scottie, Darkie, and the stalwart(高大健壮的), understanding(善解人意的) Great Dane,

Helga, whose warm, tender , and playful(顽皮的) friendships are so comforting to me.

On that busy first day I should also view(看) the small simple things of my home. I want to see the warm(明朗愉快的) colors in the rugs(地毯) under my feet, the pictures on the walls, the intimate(亲切的) trifles(琐碎物件) that transform(使转变成) a house into home. My eyes would rest respectfully(敬重地) on the books in raised type(阳文书籍) which I have read, but they would be more eagerly interested in the printed books which seeing people can read, for during the long night of my life the

books I have read and those which have been read to me have built themselves into a great shining

lighthouse(灯塔), revealing(显示) to me the deepest channels(航道;渠道) of human life and the human spirit.

In the afternoon of that first seeing(能看见的) day. I should take a long walk in the woods and intoxicate(陶醉) my eyes on the beauties of the world of Nature trying desperately(拼命地) to absorb

(吸收) in a few hours the vast splendor(无穷的壮丽) which is constantly unfolding(展现) itself to those

who can see. On the way home from my woodland jaunt(短途游览) my path would lie near a farm so that

I might see the patient(驯良的) horses ploughing(犁田) in the field (perhaps I should see only a tractor(拖拉机)!) and the serene(安详的) content(满足) of men living close to the soil. And I should pray for the glory(光辉) of a colorful sunset.

When dusk(黄昏) had fallen, I should experience the double delight of being able to see by artificial(人造的) light which the genius of man(人类的天才) has created to extend(延展) the power of his

sight(视力) when Nature decrees(命令;颁布) darkness.

In the night of that first day of sight, I should not be able to sleep, so full would be my mind of the

memories of the day(白天的记忆).

The Second Day

The next day ---- the second day of sight----I should arise(起来) with the dawn and see the

thrilling miracle by which night is transformed(转成) into day. I should behold(观看) with awe(肃然敬畏的

心情) the magnificent panorama(壮观的景象) of light with which the sun

awakens the sleeping earth.

This day I should devote to(专心于) a hasty glimpse of (匆忙地扫视)the world, past and

present. I should want to see the pageant(展示) of man?s progress, the kaleidoscope(万花筒) of the ages.

How can so much be compressed(压缩成) into one day? Through the museums, of course. Often I have visited the New York Museum of Natural History to touch with my hands many of the objects there

exhibited, but I have longed to see with my eyes the condensed(浓缩的) history of the earth and its

inhabitants(居民) displayed there - animals and the races of men pictured(展示出) in their native(自

然的) environment; gigantic carcasses of dinosaurs and mastodons(巨大恐龙和柱牙象骨架) which

roamed(漫游) the earth long before man appeared, with his tiny stature(身材) and powerful brain, to

conquer(征服) the animal kingdom; realistic presentations(逼真展现) of the processes of development in animals, in man, and in the implements(工具) which man has used to fashion(建造) for himself a

secure(安全的) home on this planet; and a thousand and one other aspects(方面) of natural history.

I wonder how many readers of this article have viewed this panorama(景貌) of the face of

living things as pictured(展示) in that inspiring(生动的) museum. Many, of course, have not had the opportunity, but I am sure that many who have had the opportunity have not made use of it. there, indeed,

is a place to use your eyes. You who see can spend many fruitful(成果丰硕的) days there, but I with my

imaginary(想象的) three days of sight, could only take a hasty glimpse(仓促地一瞥), and pass on(匆

匆而过).

My next stop(下一站) would be the Metropolitan Museum of Art, for just as the Museum of Natural History reveals the material aspects of the world(展示世界

的物质方面), so does the Metropolitan

show the myriad facets of the human spirit(展示大量的人类精神方面). Throughout the history of

humanity the urge to artistic expression(对艺术表现的强烈冲动) has been almost as powerful as the urge for food, shelter, and procreation(人类对食物、住所和繁衍的迫切需要). And here , in the vast chambers(宽敞的大厅) of the Metropolitan Museum, is unfolded(展示) before me the spirit of Egypt, Greece, and Rome, as expressed in their art. I know well through my hands the sculptured(雕刻的) gods and goddesses

of the ancient Nile-land(尼罗河土地). I have felt copies of Parthenon friezes(巴台农神殿中楣石柱的复制

品), and I have sensed the rhythmic beauty of charging Athenian warriors(向前冲锋的的雅典武士的匀称

和谐美). Apollos and Venuses and the Winged Victory of Samothrace(阿波罗、维纳斯和有翅膀的萨摩丝

雷斯胜利女神) are friends of my finger tips. The gnarled, bearded features of Homer(荷马的长满胡须、

节瘤众多的面部雕像) are dear to me, for he, too, knew blindness.

My hands have lingered upon(逗留) the living marble of roman sculpture(罗马大理石雕像)

as well as that of later generations. I have passed my hands over a plaster cast of Michelangelo?s inspiring

and heroic Moses(米开朗基罗那鼓舞人心的英雄摩西雕塑石膏模); I have sensed the power of Rodin(罗

丹); I have been awed by the devoted spirit of Gothic wood carving(我对哥特木刻的热忱精神感到敬畏).

These arts which can be touched have meaning for me, but even they were meant to be seen rather than felt,

and I can only guess at the beauty which remains hidden(仍未发现) from me. I can admire the simple lines of a Greek vase, but its figured decorations are lost to me(我对它的图案装饰却是迷惘的).

So on this, my second day of sight, I should try to probe into(探究) the soul of man through this art. The things I knew through touch I should now see。More splendid still, the whole magnificent world of painting would be opened to me,

from the Italian Primitives(意大利文艺复兴前期), with their serene religious devotion(对宗教泰然虔诚奉献的), to the Moderns(现代派作品), with their feverish visions(狂

热梦幻的). I should look deep into the canvases(油画) of Raphael(拉斐尔), Leonardo da Vinci(达芬

奇), Titian(提香), Rembrandt(瑞姆布兰特). I should want to feast(饱享) my eyes upon the warm colors of Veronese(维勒内兹), study the mysteries(神秘) of E1 Greco(埃尔?格列科), catch a new vision of Nature from Corot(科罗). Oh, there is so much rich meaning and beauty in the art of the ages for you who have

eyes to see!

Upon my short visit to this temple of art(艺术殿堂) I should not be able to review a fraction(部分) of that great world of art which is open to you. I should be able to get only a superficial(表面的)

impression. Artists tell me that for deep and true appreciation(鉴赏) of art one must educated(训练) the

eye. One must learn through experience to weigh(衡量) the merits(价值) of line, of composition, of form and color. If I had eyes, how happily would I embark upon(从事) so fascinating(迷人的) a study! Yet I

am told that, to many of you who have eyes to see, the world of art is a dark night, unexplored(未曾开发)

and unilluminated(未曾照亮).

It would be with extreme reluctance(极端的不情愿) that I should leave the Metropolitan Museum, which contains the key to beauty -- a beauty so neglected(被忽视). Seeing persons, however, do not need a metropolitan to find this key to beauty. The same key lies waiting(等待着) in smaller museums, and in books on the shelves of even small libraries. But naturally, in my limited time of imaginary sight(想

象的能看见的), I should choose the place where the key unlocks(打开) the greatest treasures(宝库) in

the shortest time.

The evening of my second day of sight I should spend at a theatre or at the movies. Even now I

often attend theatrical performances of all sorts, but the action of the play(剧情) must be spelled into(拼

写) my hand by a companion(同伴). But how I should like to see with my own

eyes the fascinating figure

(迷人形象) of Hamlet(哈姆雷特), or the gusty Falstaff amid colorful Elizabethan trappings(那在艳丽

多彩的伊丽莎白时代服饰中刮大风的伏尔斯塔夫)! How I should like to follow(领会) each movement of

the graceful Hamlet, each strut of the hearty Falstaff(热忱的伏尔斯塔夫的每一个昂首阔步地样子)! And

since I could see only one play, I should be confronted by a many-horned dilemma(面临进退两难的困境),

for there are scores of plays I should want to see. You who have eyes can see any you like. How many of you, I wonder, when you gaze at(注视着) a play, a movie, or any spectacle(奇观), realize and give thanks for

the miracle of sight which enables you to enjoy its color , grace(优雅), and movement?

I cannot enjoy the beauty of rhythmic(节奏感很强的) movement except in a sphere restricted

(限制) to the touch of my hands. I can vision(想象) only dimly(模糊地) the grace of a Pavlowa(一

个巴甫洛娃的优美), although I know something of the delight of rhythm, for often I can sense the beat(节

拍) of music as it vibrates(振动) through the floor. I can well imagine that cadenced motion(有节拍的

动作) must be one of the most pleasing sights in the world. I have been able to gather something of this by tracing(摸索) with my fingers the lines in sculptured marble(大理石雕刻中的线条轮廓); if this static

grace(静态的雅致) can be so lovely, how much more acute(强烈的) must be the thrill(激动) of seeing

grace in motion(动态的雅致).

One of my dearest memories is of the time when Joseph Jefferson(约瑟夫?杰佛逊) allowed me

to touch his face and hands as he went through(完成;表演) some of the gestures and speeches(对白)

of his beloved Rip Van Winkle(角色瑞普?范?温克尔). I was able to catch thus a meager glimpse of (微弱

的一瞥)the world of drama, and I shall never forget the delight of that moment. But, oh, how much I must miss, and how much pleasure you seeing ones can derive(产生) from watching and hearing the interplay

(相互作用) of speech and movement in the unfolding of a dramatic performance! If I could see only one play, I should know how to picture(描绘) in my mind the action of a hundred plays which I have read or had transferred to me through the medium of the manual alphabet(手势字母的媒介).

So, through the evening of my second imaginary(设想的) day of sight, the great fingers of

dramatic literature(戏剧文学) would crowd(涌现出来) sleep from my eyes.

The Third Day

The following morning, I should again greet the dawn(黎明), anxious to discover new delights

(愉快), for I am sure that, for those who have eyes which really see, the dawn of each day must be a perpetually(永恒地) new revelation(展露) of beauty.

This, according to (按照)the terms(条件) of my imagined miracle(奇迹), is to be my third

and last day of sight(能看见). I shall have no time to waste in regrets or longings; there is too much to see. The first day I devoted to(献给) my friends, animate(有生命的) and inanimate(无生命的). The second

revealed(展示) to me the history of man and Nature. Today I shall spend in the workaday world of the present, amid(在之中) the haunts(忙碌) of men going about(set about着手) the business of life(生

活事务). And where can one find so many activities and conditions of men as in New York? So the city becomes my destination(目的地).

I start from my home in the quiet little suburb(郊区) of Forest Hills, Long Island. Here ,

surrounded by green lawns(草坪), trees, and flowers, are neat(整洁的) little houses, happy with the voices

and movements of wives and children, havens(平静安宁之地) of peaceful rest for men who toil(辛劳) in

the city. I drive across the lacy(带花边的) structure of steel which spans(跨越)

the East River, and I get

a new and startling vision(令人震惊的视觉) of the power and ingenuity(独创性) of the mind of man.

Busy boats chug and scurry(鸣叫着来来往往) about the river -- racy speed boat(高速快艇), stolid,

snorting tugs(笨头笨脑喘着气的拖驳). If I had long days of sight ahead, I should spend many of them watching the delightful activity upon the river.

I look ahead, and before me rise the fantastic(奇妙的) towers of New York, a city that seems to have stepped from the pages of a fairy story. What an awe-inspiring(令人敬畏的) sight, these glittering

spires(闪闪发光的尖塔). these vast(巨大的) banks of stone and steel-structures(钢铁的建筑群) such

as the gods might build for themselves! This animated picture is a part of the lives of millions of people

every day. How many, I wonder, give it so much as a second glance(看一眼)? Very few, I fear, Their eyes are

blind to (熟视无睹)this magnificent(辉煌的) sight because it is so familiar to them(对他们太熟悉).

I hurry to the top of one of those gigantic structures(巨大建筑), the Empire State Building(帝

国大厦), for there , a short time ago, I “saw“ the city below through the eyes of my secretary(秘书). I am

anxious to compare my fancy(想象) with reality. I am sure I should not be disappointed in the panorama(景观) spread out before me, for to me it would be a vision(景象)of another world.

Now I begin my rounds of the city. First, I stand at a busy corner, merely looking at people, trying by sight of (审视)them to understand something of their live. I see smiles, and I am happy. I see serious determination(决心), and I am proud, I see suffering, and I am compassionate(同情).

I stroll(漫步) down Fifth Avenue. I throw my eyes out of focus(聚焦), so that I see no

particular object(目标) but only a seething(川流不息的) kaleidoscope of colors(彩色万花筒). I am

certain that the colors of women?s dresses moving in a throng(成群) must be a gorgeous spectacle(华丽

的奇观) of which I should never tire. But perhaps if I had sight I should be like most other women -- too

interested in styles(式样) and the cut(剪裁) of individual dresses to give much attention to the splendor(华丽) of color in the mass(人群). And I am convinced(使信服), too, that I should become an inveterate(有瘾的) window shopper, for it must be a delight to the eye(赏心悦目) to view the myriad(无数的)

articles(商品) of beauty on display(陈列).

From Fifth Avenue(大道) I make a tour of(游览) the city-to Park Avenue, to the slums(贫

民窟), to factories, to parks where children play. I take a stay-at-home trip abroad(不出国的国外旅行) by

visiting the foreign quarters(居民区). Always my eyes are open wide to all the sights of both happiness and misery(悲哀) so that I may probe(探究) deep and add to my understanding of how people work and live. my heart is full of the images(形象) of people and things. My eye passes lightly over no single trifle(不轻

易地忽略任何一件小事); it strives(力求) to touch and hold closely each thing its gaze rests upon(所见

的). Some sights are pleasant, filling the heart with happiness; but some are miserably pathetic(悲惨的).

To these latter(后者的) I do not shut my eyes, for they, too, are part of life. To close the eye on them is to close the heart and mind.

My third day of sight is drawing to(临近) an end. Perhaps there are many serious pursuits(强烈的愿望) to which I should devote the few remaining(剩下的) hours, but I am afraid that on the

evening of that last day I should again run away to the theater, to a hilariously(欢快的) funny play, so that

I might appreciate the overtones(含蓄意义) of comedy in the human spirit.

At midnight my temporary(短暂的) respite(暂止) from blindness would cease(终止), and

permanent(永恒的) night would close in on me again. Naturally in those three short days I should not have

seen all I wanted to see. Only when darkness had again descended(降临) upon me should I realize how much I had left(留下) unseen. But my mind would be so crowded with glorious(辉煌的;美丽的)

You would use your eyes as never before. Everything you saw would become dear to you. Your eyes would touch and embrace

恐怕,同样的懒散也成为利用我们所有的本能和感觉的特点。只有聋子才珍惜听力,

在我身边的朋友,我熟知他们,因为长年累月他们在各方面都对我表露了他们自己。而对那些偶然的朋友我只有一个不完全的印象,一种我从下面方式中得到的印象:一次握手,我的指尖从他们的双唇上感触到的他们所说的话,或者是他们在我两手掌上轻轻地拍抚。

我的下一站将是大都会艺术博物馆。像自然历史博物馆展示世界的物质方面一样,大都会艺术博物馆展示大量的人类精神方面。在贯穿人类历史的全过程中,对艺术表现的强烈冲动就像人类对食物、住所和繁衍的迫切需要一样强烈。而这里,在大都会博物馆那宽敞的大厅里,在我们面前展示了通过艺术形式表达出来的古埃及、古希腊和古罗马的精神世界。我通过我的手很好地了解了雕刻的古代尼罗河土地上的众神,我摸过巴台农神殿(译注:巴台农神殿是希腊雅典城内的帕拉斯?雅曲娜神殿,建于公元前,,,,,,,年间。神殿由大
